I think phpbb is a very good board and it's free which saves money,

I use PHPBB because I've been using the software for a few years now. So I'm really comfortable with making my own mods and updates. Price was not a consideration as much as the need to mod the code.

Also, with tactical modding, you can create the same sort of feature set as vb has. I have done it before, and I can do it again!

Yeah, but I'm going to say it was my fault. I was behind on updates...

If you are confortable with phpbb by all means that's what ya use, using a software that you use just because thats what people want ends up being more trouble in the end..

I have used phpbb and smf. I prefer SMF mostly because of the package manager, and because there are more basic features (like attachments)
But phpbb3 will hopefully resolve my gripes.
Having used it for about a year though, phpbb is very fast and a great piece of software.
Still prefer SMF

I have to agree here. I also like that the community support for phpbb is huge!

yep, the support community for phpbb is great, and the amount of hacks/mods is also quite amazing. If you are a good coder, phpbb is quite powerful.
I'm not very good at coding and hacking, since SMF has more features built in, in my opinion it is the better choice (for me). Especially considering when I had phpbb, installing the attachment mod took me and my friend like 3 hours to do

I use phpBB, because I remember a long time ago when it FIRST came out and I used it.
Everytime I use it I get a sense of nostalgia. I've used vBulletin since it's first version too, so I have a license from them as well..
I used to have an Invision License, but I never really liked Invision Board.

The biggest problem with phpbb is security issues. But it seems that the latest version is quite safe.
Now that v3 beta is out, I really hope it would be more secure than the previous version.

I have used both phpBB and IPB, phpBB is basic, and very secure. IPB is feature rich, and also fairly secure, with regular updates.

I use vBulletin. Just because of the options, but if you wanted to save money. (vBulletin isn't cheep) I would use PHPBB
