Hi there,

I have a sticky work situation.

I am technically freelance, however, I have been pressured into working in my client's office, by my client's hours, on my client's equipment and at my client's rate. Over the last year, I have also declined work from other clients, and now I only have this one (which I believe is creating a bad tax situation). It happened very gradually over the last year, and all of a sudden I'm sitting here wondering what on earth happened, and what an appropriate way to get out of this mess is.

I have to ask when I'd like time off, and I've also been subject to quarterly reviews. My request for a raise was also denied.

Any advice?

Hi rrroars hello2

Welcome to our community!

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I can see how easy it was to fall into it. If this client is your only source for income I would stick it out for a while and start getting your old client (and new ones) back. Start by sending emails or calling your old clients and letting them know you are accepting new work. You will be surprised how many of them will be happy to hear from you if you did a good job for them in the past.

I hope this helps.

Johnny

Hi rroar,

I agree w/ phiber. Get all the contacts and a few firm jobs then slowly detach yourself from your present company. I have to do that with my old company. Thankfully they are nice people and different people in that company keep asking me back. If you part with them on a good note, they'll call you again. Unless they are not very nice.

Good luck with it
