I've been considering looking into creating one of these. Has anyone here had any experience running one? Have you found them to be profitable? Are there any pre made scripts available for this type of site?

Few questions here so I will try my best.

Image sites are hard to run now. Since the introduction of flickr and sites like it the bar has been set pretty high for this type of site. I've created scripts to run this type of site and I can tell you that it is pretty easy to buy or have a pretty good script developed for you. Your problem is trying to make the site unique. Offering a site that allows users to upload their images and display them on a page is not going to get you the type of members that would be willing to pay for extra services like more disk space.

Profitable, they can be. If your site has the member support you can have packages from free to a few bucks and you will get people paying for that extra disk space and other services (like custom albums).

There are a lot of scripts available on the web http://www.hotscripts.com is a good resource to start looking at. Something to keep in mind here is that you really need to have something more than the average script running your site if you want to make money from it.

I hope this helps.

Johnny

Thanks for the info. I hadn't considered payed member services, I was thinking more of ads such as adsense.
It's easy to promote an image site now though - just hire a few myspace promoters and get them to promote it for you./
