How far do you go with forum modifications? In the past I used to install every half useful mod I could find to try to improve my forums. After a while though it gets to be a problem when mods are not updated at the same speed as your forum software. Upgrading a forum with loads of mods can be a right pain. These days I will only use a 3rd party mod if it's something extremely useful and I'm trying to move away from mods altogether. Ideally I would like to use basic IPB witht he addition of IPB SDK which lets me create my own tools that I know I can update myself if my board gets updated.

I try to keep the mods to a minimum. Like you said its hard to keep up with updates and so on. Plus I think members really don't use half of them.

I would also try and keep mods down to a minimum, because you have to update them, and each mod makes one's forum a bit slower.
You should install only what you need, and what your members want. Useless MODs just slow your forum down, and make it seem cluttered.
If you install many mods it will put much load on the server, and in addition it will also be too complicated and many members will not like it.
Well, I was on phpBB for 1 1/2 years. I had 50 mods installed. Now I am on VB and already installed 5-10 hacks. I am a freak in this: always want MORE features ..
I modify only what needs to be done. Usually I ask the people of the forum if they would have use for a certain mod or not.
