Do you think more people would be freelancers or do you expect that the situation will still be the same 5 years from now?
I think with the need for fresh content everyday or even hours, the need for quick turnaround will increase and will therefore increase the need for freelancers and contract workers, mercenaries for the short run in other words Smile
I think more and more people would look at freelancing as an alternate source of income in the coming years.
I think we are just at the tip of the iceberg, a true Tofler moment, as far as the future growth of freelancing

With rising energy costs and out of control health care premiums, I think more companies are going to look to outsource as much work as possible. I agree with jkwells, we are just at the tip of the iceberg.
I am not so sure it will be as popular as we think. More and more people will prefer telecommute jobs. BUt freelancing business is iffy, even on a good day.

The outsourcing is what will kill it more than anything. Publishers don't have to pay as much to get content.

You have to remember, not everyone is a self starter and ot be a freelancer you have got to be a self starter.

As the status of the economy continues to get worse. I would believe that more and more people will turn to freelancing in order to make the money they need to survive.
Alot will depend on what your area of specialty is. I still think the future is bright for people who are willing to take on various project work. I also think the market will shake itself out as those who aren't truly committed to this type of work will move onto other things
