I just got off the phone with two different clients. One, a very nice lady that I was able to get all the details for the project fast and easy. The second, a rude lady that figured I should know everything she is thinking and wants.
What I did was tried to gather as much details on the project as I could while on the phone and then take the rest of the conversation to email. This way I can send her a question and answer type formatted email.
What do you guys do?
Johnny
I do produce an agreement. It details what is expected of the client, and what is expected of me, the freelancer.
One Clause is:
The Client agrees that details shall be disclosed fully, with no confusion on the part of the freelancer.
Another is:
The Client agrees that the freelancer is a human being, and should be treated with respect and fairly at all times.
We say that we will not hesitate to drop your project, it is less work for us and we make money in other ways.
If wanted, Phiber, I could produce a document of a sample agreement as a resource available here as a sticky.
Josh,
Please do create the document. I think it would be a great resource!
Johnny
It depends what the client is worth to you. If I am only doing $50 small scripts and they're very rude I'd get rid of them but if I was working on large projects for them I'd put up with the rudeness.

Dan,
You make a very good point but when do you call it quits?
Johnny
Hopefully you can tell weather they'll be a good client before you start working on the project, if I've already done 50% of the project I'd finish it but if I am still discussing the project, I'd say something.

Seems like a good approach. I appreciate the feedback!

well i think we just need to understand our clients, there are many types of clients and different attitudes, but we need to learn to deal with them, i know its really hard specially when your client claims a lot, thats the most frustrating part, we don't have a computer generated brain to know all the things that they want, but we just need to deal with them and talk to them nicely and explain clearly what you really know.

Very good feedback. I'm sure using this approach is not only professional but I bet also saves you a client.

i agree trying to understyand the client is very good.
I don't remember where but I read something in a psychology book or something. You are dealing with an Agressive buyer. They are rude. That's there quality. And they want you to know everything....
My suggestions are:
1. Small project? Do away with it NOW.
2. Don't forget to be polite and courteous
3. Never argue
4. Talk calmy and act as you are actually noting down what they are telling you
5. Get a good book on Communication. Hehe.
