If you are talking about a business website then I think its necessary. Spam sites that just have links to other sites are a waste and I don't like them. Website that sell ebooks are also no good IMO.

No , i meant any forum or blog etc, but my intenion would be just earning some money ..

To make money of any advertisement services you need two things. Traffic and good content. Forums are blogs take a lot of work to get there IMO. Once your forum has good traffic and new content then I think its good to sell ad space to offset the cost of running the site.
