Hello! I am a first year computer engineering student and I'm just getting started with freelance work. I am doing a little work in writing, proofreading and translation, but I would love to develop some new skills. It will be some time before I am ready to work as an engineer, so I would like to work on some other skills in the meantime.

I am interested in finding out which freelance skills are most in demand but have failed to find any data on the subject. I would appreciate any suggestions regarding any skills that can be learned in up to six months and are in high demand. Smile
Well, if you are looking to do some freelance work through the online sites, web development is the way to go as the most amount of jobs are in that area. As well, the language and technology to learn would be PHP/MySQL/Apache as that is the technology of choice for many many people. It's powerful and all free so I would look towards that.
Thanks! I'll take your advice. Smile
No problem, hopefully you continue to find useful information and help through this site, keep us posted, we'd love to hear how you progress in your freelance career.

I agree. Knowledge of PHP/MySQL will land you the most jobs.
If you are interested in web design and are good at it, you can also learn about CSS. A lot of webmasters are looking for skillfull web designers who can design nice templates using CSS.

I'd say make sure you learn about good programming design and implementation. A lot of people think just because they know PHP that they can program... Trust me.. That is not the case. People pay a lot of money for good programming design.
yes php is probably the most looked for skill in freelancers if you are looking for work over hte internet. On the other hand if you are looking to work with local businesses then you may find it is differenet in your area. Where I live ASP and ASP.Net are pretty big and PHP is not used much.

Try to integrate AJAX codes in your projects together with PHP + MySQL

I would say web designing and development skills plus general programming will be in great demand with the explosion of the internet.and ecommerce.
I think the techie part of putting up a website has the highest demand nowadays. I see lots and lots of projects demanding such in gaf and scriptlance sites...
What about forum and blog installations? How high are the demand for these jobs?
