I have not worked with Ruby before.
Does it offer something that other languages cannot offer?

Ruby is suppose to be the most efficient means of coding, ie fewest lines to do the most amount of work. I am not sure this is a good thing or not, but I've been hearing so much buzz about it recently I had to ask around!

Speaking of programming languages, do you know why most languages just have one word like Java, Perl, Ruby, etc ?

Yeah, I guess your right. Simplicity would make sense although I don't think that they're a good choice since you get mixed results when searching them on search engines.
For example, the search result may show ruby that are jewels instead of ruby as a programming language.
