I think it depends on what you are doing with the machine. I think if you only use it for office type things and surfing, 512 is fine. As a developer, I find 1 GB min and 2 GB is ideal if I am running DB, Web Server and dev tools then I want as much power as possible.

In todays world I would definately say a minimum of 1GB. Also, make sure the new computer you get has DDR2 ram and not DDR. DDR ram right now is going extinct and it wouldn't help if you got ram that was hard to upgrade in the future.
